Gospel Reading – Matthew 12: 46-50

While Jesus was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers were standing outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, “Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”

But to the one who had told him this, Jesus replied, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” And pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

Reflection:

Mary stood outside wanting to speak to Jesus. People were surprised that she didn’t use her influence, resort to persuasion or elbow her way towards her son. They must have wondered about her patience, her ability to wait with quiet trust. Stay with her awhile as she waits with her eye on Jesus; see what she has to teach you in this moment of your life.

In teaching us to pray, Jesus shares his relationship with us, inviting us to call God “Our Father”. Again and again he invites us to be his family – to share, to be close, to be loved. Hear him say of you, “Here is my sister, my brother!”

  • Ask God to affirm you in who you are and in what you do?
  • Search your soul and ask yourself what draws me to want to be a friend of Jesus
