Gospel thoughts for week commencing 20th April 2020

2nd Week of Eastertide Gospel Thoughts 2020

My dear friends, I would like to leave you with two points for each of the Gospel’s in this coming week. Please allow your heart and mind to be open to the spirit of the risen Jesus! Reflect on what you read and hear, what Jesus is saying to you in the context of the Gospel message for that day! May you discover anew the power of Jesus’ words and be that word that you read, so that through that word becomes real for you and a great source of hope and faith for your salvation and the people around you!

Monday 2nd Week of Eastertide Gospel Reading – John 3:1-8

There was one of the Pharisees called Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews, who came to Jesus by night and said, ‘Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one could perform the signs that You do unless God were with you.

Jesus answered, ‘In all truth I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.’ Nicodemus said, ‘How can anyone who is already old be born? Is it possible to go back into the womb again and be born?’

Jesus replied, ‘In all truth I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born through water and the Spirit; what is born of human nature is human; what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be surprised when I say, “You must be born from above.” The wind blows where it pleases; you can hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.’

The Gospel of the Lord

Tuesday 2nd Week of Eastertide Gospel Reading – John 3:7b-15

Jesus said to Nicodemus: “‘You must be born from above.’ The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus answered and said to him, ‘How can this happen?” Jesus answered and said to him, “You are the teacher of Israel and you do not understand this? Amen, amen, I say to you, we speak of what we know and we testify to what we have seen, but you people do not accept our testimony.

If I tell you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”

The Gospel of the Lord

• What does it mean to be born of the Spirit?

• What does it mean to have Eternal life in Jesus?

Wednesday 2nd Week of Eastertide Gospel Reading – John 3:16-21

God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only-begotten Son of God. And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil.

For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.
The Gospel of the Lord

• How do you know, what you do is done in God?

• Name one thing that helps you live in the light and gives you hope?

Thursday 2nd Week of Eastertide Gospel Reading – John 3:31-36

The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things. But the one who comes from heaven is above all.

He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. Whoever does accept his testimony certifies that God is trustworthy. For the one whom God sent speaks the words of God. He does not ration his gift of the Spirit.

The Father loves the Son and has given everything over to him. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.

The Gospel of the Lord

• How do you live your life in the context of today’s Gospel, Heaven and Earth?

• John reiterates that Jesus is “the One above all.” who testifies to the truth. How do you testify to the truth?

Friday 2nd Week of Eastertide Gospel Reading – John 6:1-15

Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee. A large crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. The Jewish feast of Passover was near.

When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” He said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do. Philip answered him, “Two hundred days’ wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little.” One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?” Jesus said, “Have the people recline.”

Now there was a great deal of grass in that place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted. When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples, “Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.”

So they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat. When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, “This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world.” Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain alone.

The Gospel of the Lord

• Do you truly believe that Jesus will provide you with what you need throughout your life?

• When we are in great need, it is difficult to trust that our needs will be met, do you still trust?

Saturday 2nd Week of Eastertide Gospel Reading – Mark 16:15-20

Jesus appeared to the Eleven and said to them: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages.

They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.

The Gospel of the Lord

• How have you been empower to go forth into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel?

3rd Sunday of Eastertide Gospel Reading

My friends we have four points in today’s Gospel. I invite you to look at and reflect on. What are they saying to you? How might you share the meaning of today’s Gospel with those you love and know?

Lk 24:13-24: Jesus tries to find out what it is that is making the two disciples distressed.

What causes you stress in your life? How can you hand that over to Jesus and trust him to deal with it?

Lk 24:25-27: Jesus sheds the light of Scripture on the situation of the two disciples.

When has Jesus shead light of Scripture on you when you were going through a though time? What happen? How did it feel?

Lk 24:28-32: Jesus shares the bread and celebrates with the disciples.

How do you share bread, with your familiese and others and celeabrate? When do you recongise Jesus in the breda you share?

Lk 24:33-35: The two disciples go to Jerusalem and share their experience of the resurrection with the community.

Have you shared your Easter experience with anyone in your family or friends?
