Gospel Thought for Today 23rd October Friday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Gospel:  Luke 12:54-59

Jesus said to the crowds,
“When you see a cloud rising in the west
you say immediately that it is going to rain–and so it does;
and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south
you say that it is going to be hot–and so it is.
You hypocrites!
You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky;
why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

“Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?
If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate,
make an effort to settle the matter on the way;
otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge,
and the judge hand you over to the constable,
and the constable throw you into prison.
I say to you, you will not be released
until you have paid the last penny.”

Reflection:

Weather forecast give us direction in what we can do in a day. If it is sunny, we can go out to the park or dry our laundry in the back garden. If it is going to rain, we need to bring an umbrella. If it is going to snow, we need to be extra careful when driving. Jesus noted how the crowd can predict the weather during His time. However, He called them hypocrites for failing to interpret the various climates in own their lives: the heavy storms of conflicting priorities, the coldness of the lack of empathy, the cloudiness of indifference, the scorching heat of hatred, the darkness of sin, and the brightness of Truth. The Lord also challenged the crowd for their inability to perceive what is right and to settle animosities amicably. Jesus’ message is addressed to us too. We need to understand the signs of the times. Covid-19 has turned the world upside down. It has made us realize how fragile life is and how we should look after ourselves. It is also a wake-up call to be sensitive to the needs of those adversely affected by the pandemic. Indifference and complacency do not have a room in the hearts of those who wish to follow Jesus.

  • What steps have you taken to respond to the signs of the times such as Covid-19, poverty, and climate change?
  • How often have you examined the weather of your heart?
  • How do you settle your differences with others?

Lord Jesus, thank You for Your Word today. Grant us insight to interpret the signs of the times and act on these. Amen.

Sincerely,

Pietro
