Gospel thought for Thursday 26th November

Luke 21:20-28

“When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near.  Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. For this is the time of punishment in fulfilment of all that has been written.  How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people.  They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

“There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time, they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

Commentary

When we first read this gospel, we can at first feel rather frightened, confused, and bewildered. When we look again at the reading, and we may think to ourselves it sounds just like what is happening around us at this time. We can become quite depressed sometimes thinking of all the sinful things that are happening on our streets and in our world, we can forget all the good that is happening alongside the bad.

Evil will always try and try again to win and cloud our eyes and minds from seeing the good, making us feel everything is hopeless. Never fall into this trap, Christ has won the victory there is no situation that is too hard for Christ to conquer.

We read in the last verse of today’s gospel “they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with power and great glory, when these things begin to take place stand erect, hold your head high, because your liberation is near at hand”

Christ has won the victory, and nothing can change that fact.

Fear not stand firm call on the name of Jesus.
