Gospel Thought for Today   4th June Friday of the Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Gospel Mark 12:35-37

As Jesus was teaching in the temple area he said,

“How do the scribes claim that the Christ is the son of David?

David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, said:

The Lord said to my lord,

‘Sit at my right hand

until I place your enemies under your feet.’

David himself calls him ‘lord’;

so how is he his son?”

The great crowd heard this with delight.

Reflection

St Joseph was addressed by the angel as “son of David” (Matthew 1:20).  By adopting Jesus as his own, the Messiah became part of the Davidic line. He became a “son of David”. In today’s Gospel, Jesus is not denying this. Some commentators mentioned that the scribes’ teaching seem to imply that the Messiah is inferior to David. Jesus corrects this: the Messiah is superior to David. When He quoted Psalm 110, He clarified “The Lord” as God and “my lord” as the Messiah. The words ‘Sit at my right hand’ foretells Jesus Ascension into heaven.

There are other titles of Jesus such as Emmanuel, Prince of Peace, Wonderful Counsellor, etc. Let us take time to recall and draw inspiration from them so that we can nurture a personal relationship with Jesus whose Sacred Heart burns with love for us.

  • Who is Jesus in your life? Why?
  • How do I introduce Jesus to others?
  • How do I listen to Jesus’ message today?

Lord Jesus, thank You for Your Word today. Fill us with Your Spirit that we may know who You are in our life. As we know You, may we love and serve You. Amen.
