Gospel Thought for Today

2nd December: Thursday of the First Week of Advent

Gospel:  Matthew 7:21,24-27

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’
will enter the Kingdom of heaven,
but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

“Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them
will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.
The rain fell, the floods came,
and the winds blew and buffeted the house.
But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock.
And everyone who listens to these words of mine
but does not act on them
will be like a fool who built his house on sand.
The rain fell, the floods came,
and the winds blew and buffeted the house.
And it collapsed and was completely ruined.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Reflection:

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of heaven.”

By saying these words, Jesus is giving us that warning that the practice of religion will not be enough to secure our entry into His Kingdom. Words are not enough. We need to act, according to God’s will. All His life, Jesus did the Father’s will. In the Lord’s Prayer, it makes perfect sense that we do His will when we pray “Your Kingdom come”. We cannot one without the other. Otherwise, we will be like that fool who built his house on sand.

  • How do you do God’s will in your life?
  • What actions do you take to be worthy of God’s Kingdom?
  • How would you like Jesus to see you when He comes at the end of time?

Lord Jesus, thank You for Your Word today. O Wisdom of the Father, grant that we may wholeheartedly listen and act on Your Word. Amen.

Come, Lord Jesus, come!
